Will This Dodge Get Bested by a Land Rover?

I’ve previously touched upon the merits and limitations of Dodge’s class of heavy duty trucks.  You know what, though?  The Dodge Ram 3500 with a turbo diesel engine is not one of them. At first, there’s a feeling of disbelief at seeing a Cummins turbo diesel, with an optimum output of over 700 lb ft of torque, get pulled around like a rag doll by none other than a Land Rover.  Appearances, however, can be deceiving.  The Land Rover Defender has some surprising advantages that may have been hinted at but not altogether clearly illustrated.

It’s a sore day, indeed, when an American classic falls to an European import.  However, the Land Rover Defender 90 has a very well engineered turbo diesel injected engine capable of some surprising bursts of energy.

The Land Rover Defender is the European answer to American horsepower and torque supremacy – in a classically more compact European package. For a four cylinder station wagon – as it’s classified – it’s 300 TDI engine only packs the equivalent of 265 lb ft of torque! Imagine that!
